Beyond BOW Deer Creek Shotgun Event
Yesterday I had the joy of getting outside on a beautiful day with some fantastic gals! There were 6 who attended the very first Beyond BOW course offered in Florida. BOW (Becoming an Outdoors Woman) is an outreach of the FWC. Their workshops are designed primarily for women; however, it is an excellent opportunity for anyone 18 years of age or older to learn the outdoor skills usually associated with hunting and fishing, and a variety of outdoor pursuits. These workshops focus on the learning of outdoor skills. We strive to offer a variety of topics in our workshops, balanced between hunting/shooting, fishing and non-consumptive (canoeing, camping, etc.) activities.
The Beyond BOW Workshops take this introduction a bit further. Typically only 1 skill is the focus of the day and event can be 1-2 days long.
Deer Creek Sporting Clays in Land O’ Lakes Florida were our hosts for the event and I have to say the staff there was beyond amazing! Owners Roger and Cathy Gascoigne are both masters of this sport! Our instructor for the day was to be Roger – the only British Clay Pigeon Shooting Association (CPSA) certified coach and Associate Member of the Institute of Clay Shooting Instructors living in Florida. After introductions were made and goodie bags (donated by Not a Clue Adventures) handed out, Rodger began our instruction. We learned a lot about the history and origins of sporting clays. Rodger covered a bit of his qualifications and we could quickly see we were being instructed by the best around! Then we were introduced to various models and size of shotguns and even fitted for one that we would be using for the day. The time Roger took with each of the girls paid off! We had a varied group of ladies some that had never touched a firearm to other that were proficient with handguns. None of us were prepared for what came next.
Roger took us over and started pulling the clays explaining the process and showed us proper stance. After a few tweeks he was ready to let us give it a try. EVERY one of the girls hit at least one of their first 2 targets! We were shooting at clays that were coming towards us – from the right and even ones that ran across the ground like a rabbit (my personal favorite to hit!). I was so impressed with all the girls!
We took a break for a wonderful lunch and Roger sat in for some casual conversation. Soon, we were ready to get back at our lessons. Once everyone was brought up to speed we were all given our shotguns, ammo and taken out to the “Hunters Course” We were able to shoot at 2 target in a row (A and B “birds”) and work on the skills we learned in the morning instruction. We shot over 50 additional clays in the afternoon. Girl’s scores were all between 14 and 26. Aja – the gal who had never touched a firearm before got that high score! These scores are amazing for first time shooters and we all know it was due to fabulous instruction.
We were all good and tired by the time we finished up at 3:30 pm. After a quick visit to the gift shop we were all heading out in different directions knowing we will all get back together for an intermediate class soon!
I can’t thank BOW, the FWC and Deer Creek enough for being able to bring this class to fruition. We all had an amazing time and learned so much!
Until next time,
