2nd Annual Haunted Halloween at Hillsborough River State Park
Halloween Weekend 2010
We had a great group come out and camp with us over Halloween weekend at Hillsborough River State Park this year. The weather was perfect just cool enough for a campfire and warm enough not to freeze! So much better than the hot weekend we had last year! We left the rain fly off of each of the tents this year as there was no chance of rain and low humidity. The full moon and the stars were quite a sight that first night sitting around the fire with warm bellies (thanks to the peach cobbler).
Pumpkins and monsters decorated our campsite and blinking eyes were to be seen in the shadows at night. Bo, our super wonderful camp dog was there to protect us from anything that went bump in the night. Of course he took advantage of his fee of lots of petting and treats before we all went to our tents at night! Saturday Morning was wonderful, the sun was shining in the trees and not far from our site a Barred Owl hung out for a few photos before heading into the forest to sleep his day away.
After everyone had a hot breakfast we hit the trails to get a bit of exercise and see what critters we could spot. We spotted woodpeckers and cardinals, raccoon tracks and spiders but not much more on this hike. Soon we were back at camp and everyone was hungry again! After a hearty lunch and a nap we set out to hike the Banyard Trail. This was a much smoother hike but still all worked up an appetite…and everyone had gourmet smores on their minds….! We had quite a few trick-or-treaters come by our camp and we had a lot of fun conversation and just a good time sharing stories and adventures around the campfire. I was in my sleeping bag dreaming long before the other campers retired!
Sunday morning we all awoke to another beautiful day. After a big breakfast of eggs and grits and biscuits we headed out for our final hike up the Rapids Nature Trails. We checked out the suspension bridge, went over some outdoor photography tips, spotted some swamp lilies in bloom and yet another woodpecker! Everyone was dragging butt as we got back into camp, Bo was beat. After a dip in the river he did not even worry about the dirt that covered him in spots resembling a Dalmatian as he dosed in the afternoon sun. After making sure everyone had another big lunch it was time to pack up camp. Everyone was super helpful and we had camp broke down in less than and hour!
I can’t wait for next year. It is so much fun spending time around the campfire with these folks. If you are interested in joining us next year, just check out our website and let us know! Http://www.notaclueadventures.com
