A visit to Bok Tower

A visit to Bok Tower

June 2011

I had wanted to get over to see this “attraction” since I moved to Florida years ago and had not gotten the chance.  So on a very hot summer day I headed out with a friend to see the summer gardens, tower and do some geocaching. On the way we stopped to experience “Spook Hill” in Lake Wales.

Spook Hill is a neat little treat. This is a fun and free place to introduce kids
to a little magic. This is one of the many “Gravity Hills” in North America where cars inexplicably defy the laws of science. There’s a large sign on North Wales Drive explaining “The Legend” and how to experience the effect.

Just a few miles up the hwy you will find one of Florida’s most beautiful gardens. The gardens sit at one of the highest points in Florida 298 Feet above sea level.  In 1921 Edward Bok was wintering in the adjacent community and on one of his evening walks along the Lake Wales Ridge on the top of “Iron Mountain” the idea came to him to preserve this hilltop and create a bird sanctuary – a place of beauty, serenity and
peace.

In all the natural beauty of the Gardens, Bok believed
something was missing. Remembering the glorious sound of carillons in his
native Netherlands, he decided to build a beautiful Singing Tower as the focal
point of the Gardens which would be crowned by a large carillon.

No matter what time of year you visit you will find the
gardens in bloom. The caretakers, care for this place as if their child and
pour their love into it. In addition to the tower and gardens you will find a
wonderful gift shop, a very tasty café and a very nice museum. I encourage you
to take a stop out of your busy schedule and spend a day winding down at Bok
Tower.

About notacluegal

Jeanene was born in Pittsburgh, PA. As a young child her family was very active in the outdoors. Things changed when her parents decided to travel down different paths in life and with that decision so went many of the opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Being lucky to live in the suburbs Jeanene always had a backyard to play in and loved being outdoors. As the years passed she took every opportunity to be outdoors. She bought land in Tennessee and as a single mom moved her young daughter to the mountains. The were many life lessons learned on that mountain. There was no plumbing on the property – or even a house, but that did not stop her. She learned to live off of what was available and built her own cabin from the trees on her property. Those were rough years but the most rewarding. Now Jeanene resides in Tampa, Fl. and works as an office manager full time….but still yeans to be outdoors. Jeanene started “Not a Clue Adventures” to teach everyone she could how wonderful the outdoors are! That camping and fishing and hiking can be done by everyone and at many different levels. Single mom’s no longer have to be afraid to take their sons and daughters outdoors. By working with young couples, single parents and even seniors, she gets to teach others about her love for the outdoors and hopes to open their eyes to new adventures. In 2009, Jeanene completed certification as a Leave No Trace Instructor. She also works closely with the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) and the Florida State Parks. Jeanene is also certified in First Aid/Adult CPR.
