Backpacking 101 Class

Backpacking 101 Class April 2013

Not a Clue Adventures with the cooperation of the FWC Chinsegut Conservation Center we put together a full day class introducing backpacking to quite a large group of new hikers. We all met in the cool of the morning and reviewed different types of packs and other essential backpacking gear, Leave No Trace Principles, food options and more. Everyone got to try on different packs to understand why a proper fitting pack is so important.

Being Silly at Class

Many that brought their own packs learned the best place to store and pack different items and other options for items they may have had or forgotten. IT was not long before the class had worked up quite an appetite!

Trying on Packs

Lunch was delivered by Lake Lindsey Mall and we all got our fill of fresh made sandwiches, chips and cookies before loading up our packs and all heading out for a hike. We of course made sure everyone was hydrated and discussed the importance of this over lunch.

Once we were on our way everyone fell into a smooth rhythm. The day was getting warmer and a slight threat of rain made the air heavy. The walk down hill had the student practicing tightening their leg muscles to give less stress upon their knees with each step and the packs required them to keep their torsos tight, it was not long until they started realizing this was not like hiking. About half way around May’s Prairie and the ground leveled out and the younger kids started noticing animal signs, butterflies and flowers. We would talk about the changed in terrain and eco-systems, about why special places like Chinsegut need to be protected.

As we came back around the May’s Prairie we started up the grade that brought us down the hill earlier. As we walked through the beautiful sand hill and pines  a few more moans and a bit more sweat were experienced. Everyone I am glad to say successfully completed the class and many were looking forward to their next experience – but not till fall when it cools down a bit! Many were planning to come back and hike other trails at Chinsegut.

About notacluegal

Jeanene was born in Pittsburgh, PA. As a young child her family was very active in the outdoors. Things changed when her parents decided to travel down different paths in life and with that decision so went many of the opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Being lucky to live in the suburbs Jeanene always had a backyard to play in and loved being outdoors. As the years passed she took every opportunity to be outdoors. She bought land in Tennessee and as a single mom moved her young daughter to the mountains. The were many life lessons learned on that mountain. There was no plumbing on the property – or even a house, but that did not stop her. She learned to live off of what was available and built her own cabin from the trees on her property. Those were rough years but the most rewarding. Now Jeanene resides in Tampa, Fl. and works as an office manager full time….but still yeans to be outdoors. Jeanene started “Not a Clue Adventures” to teach everyone she could how wonderful the outdoors are! That camping and fishing and hiking can be done by everyone and at many different levels. Single mom’s no longer have to be afraid to take their sons and daughters outdoors. By working with young couples, single parents and even seniors, she gets to teach others about her love for the outdoors and hopes to open their eyes to new adventures. In 2009, Jeanene completed certification as a Leave No Trace Instructor. She also works closely with the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) and the Florida State Parks. Jeanene is also certified in First Aid/Adult CPR.

Jeanene – I think I’d like to buy my husband and son gift certificates for the Backpacker 101 class. How do I do that? Is there a schedule?

Janet please give me a call as we have done some donated coupons for backpacking outings, I am just not sure what your coupons include – we will not do another class until the temperatures drop in the fall but I would be happy to figure out with you what you do have for an offer.
